This 3 axis accelerometer is best suited for quick prototyping and DIY projects. Based on MMA7620 accelerometer chip from Freescale Semiconductors. The board makes it easy to use the MMA7260 chip which is very small QFN (lead less, thus hard to work by hand). We know that most DIY project/hacks are based on 5v supply but modern chips works mostly with 3.3volts only, so we integrate a 3.3 volt low drop out (LDO) regulator on board. Few other passive parts are also built-in, they are required for proper operation.

To use the module the user just need to do the followings :-

>> User just need to apply proper levels (LOW or HIGH*) on two g-Select pins for selecting the range of operation. MMA7260 supports 3 selectable range (1.5g/2g/4g/6g). Note that g is a unit of acceleration which equals to the acceleration due to gravity and is equal to 9.80665m/s2

>> Make the SLEEP pin high* (SLEEP signal is active low so putting a high* signal will wake up the device)

>> Now X,Y and Z output pins gives a voltage proportional to the acceleration in that axis. Each axis can give positive,negative or zero acceleration. The zero bias point is half of Vcc i.e. 3.3/2 = 1.65v. Any thing lower than 1.65v is negative acceleration in that axis. 1.65v means NO acceleration and more than 1.65 is positive acceleration. The device has different sensitivity for different modes (i.e. 1.5g/2g/4g/6g). For example in 1.5g mode it gives 800mV/g sensitivity.

You just need to feed the output to ADC of Microcontroller and measure the voltage levels, then apply some simple mathematics to get the acceleration.

Accelerometers also measures the static acceleration. That means even if it is at rest at you table it will show a acceleration due to gravity. This fact is utilized to measure the tilt of any device by using simple trigonometry. If you have used the iPhone or Nokia 5800 then you must be familiar with applications that detects the orientation of the phone in space and do magical things like auto landscape/portrait switching or motion gaming. They use the same technique!

Robotics engineers may use this to detect the slope of the surface the robot is going on.

*High Input on any pin must not exceed 3.3v Do not connect 5v MCUs output lines to these. Use the 3.3v OUT pin to apply logic high to required pins.
